Presidio Armor Cloud Technology is a breakthrough case construction developed with the sole purpose of improving drop protection for your phone. We combined our tried-and-true Impact Geometry with an assembled liner instead of an overmolded one, creating air pockets behind each impact geometry to improve deflection and help absorb energy.

The lineup of new cases with Armor Cloud Technology
My role on the project was to oversee the design engineering, material selection, adhesive validation, and IML integration for all cases dating back to iPhone 6s. This huge initiative was a massive refresh to Speck's premium product line, and our largest launch in company history. It also introduced a flagship product to our offerings, the Presidio Armor Cloud. It required constant collaboration with Industrial Design, Marketing, CMF, and contract manufacturing teams. The armor cloud case introduced an in-mold-laminated (IML) graphic, with a "halo" overmolded bezel to help expose and celebrate the air-pocket technology.

Presidio 2 Assembly
Presidio 2 Armor Cloud increases the complexity by adding both a soft bezel and a graphic film to expose the sides of the air technology and hide the adhesive. These also allow an incredible amount of colorways for future developments. The liner is shared between Presidio 2 and Armor Cloud

How the Armor Cloud Technology airbag works during drop
Key Takeaways
• Adhesive bonding reliability and consistency at scale
• Moving from single-piece construction to assembly construction manufacturing
• Integrating an IML film and graphics application processes to a case
• Achieving massive manufacturing efficiency gains, being able to construct liners separately
• Sharing subassemblies across multiple finished goods to save cost and increase output
• Many injection mold tooling innovations, with extreme undercuts and innovative demolding processes
